Growing Faith  (2 Thessalonians 1:1-5)

 

People ask if we know of a good church in the city. 

Paul writes letter to a church that had come into existence out of a pagan culture about 12-18 months before.

As you would expect, it was not free of problems. No church is. It’s amazing how quickly Satan infiltrates a church.

But in spite of the problems, they were growing in faith, love, and endurance under persecution. 

 

In the grace and peace of the gospel.

Grace is God’s unmerited favour, shown to us in the death of Jesus Christ on our behalf. Grace means that God bestows all the blessings of salvation—eternal life, forgiveness of all our sins, and complete right standing with Him—as a gift to those who deserve His wrath. 

Peace refers to total well-being, but especially to the spiritual well-being that comes from being reconciled to God through Christ. 

His shed blood paid the penalty of our sins so that we are now at peace with God.

 

Increase in Faith 

We need to be thankful to God because, He is behind this growth. 

Faith is not a one-time event, where we believe and it’s over. 

Our faith in God and the many promises of His word must grow. The difficult news is that such growth usually comes through trials. 

You’re cruising along, thinking that you’re trusting in Jesus, when, you get hit with something difficult. It may be a health problem, the loss of a job, a family crisis,  a financial crisis or something else that is beyond your ability to handle. What should you do?

 

Increasing love for one another.

Increasing love for one another flows out of growing faith in the Lord Jesus, who commanded us to love one another even as He loved us (John 13:34-35). Paul had commended the Thessalonians for their love (1 Thess. 1:3).

He prayed that their love would increase and abound (1 Thess. 3:12); and again commended them for their love, urging them to excel still more (1 Thess. 4:9-10). 

Now he had heard that their love was growing ever greater. This means that we never arrive at a point where we can check love off our list for prayer and growth.

 

Suffering in light of the kingdom of God.

When we go through severe trials, we tend to think that God has forsaken us and is not working out His plan for us. 

He wants us to understand that suffering is often the means God uses to work out His eternal purpose and prepare us for His kingdom. 

persevering in suffering is an evidence that God is working in us, preparing us for His eternal kingdom.

Peter expressed a similar idea (1 Pet. 1:6-7): “In this  you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

 

Are we soaked in God’s grace and peace through the gospel? Are we growing in faith and love? Are we persevering in our trials? And, are we viewing our trials in light of God’s coming kingdom?

 

Let us Pray 

Heavenly father, Thank you for your grace and the gospel. Help us to grow in faith and love. Help us to persevere under challenging circumstances and look forward for your kingdom to come. In Jesus Name. Amen.

Living Christianly Part II
1 Thessalonians 5: 16-28  
The mark of true Christian faith is that it changes everything you do and say. It affects every area of your life. Paul outlines some areas as he closes his 1st letter with profound wisdom that can help us live Christianly even today. 
#1 Rejoice always
Rejoice always means Be cheerful. Do not let things get you down. Society is filled with despair and gloom. 
Christian can rejoice always because their joy isn’t based in circumstances, but in God. Circumstances change, but God doesn’t.
Count it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials and temptations," James 1:2
#2 Pray continually
Prayer is communication with God, and we can live each minute of the day in a constant, flowing, conversation with God. That is the method of drawing on the inner strength that God provides.
#3 Give thanks
Why be thankful? Because when you are faced with a trial you are being given an opportunity to glorify God. If you never face trials or pressures, how could anyone ever see that you have an invisible means of support, that you have a reliable source of strength that others do not know anything about? These are the opportunities that God gives us. So, be thankful.
#4 This is God’s will for you
The will of God is not to make some dramatic display of power or gift that is going to attract attention. It is the quiet response you make to the daily trials and circumstance in which you find yourself. 
If you want to do the will of God there are the two areas in which his will is clearly set out for you: Moral purity for your body; continual thanksgiving for your spirit. 
#5 Do not quench the Spirit. 
We can quench the fire of the Spirit by our doubt, our indifference, our rejection of Him, or by the distraction of others. When people start to draw attention to themselves, it is a sure quench to the Spirit.
The Spirit's promptings always come in two areas: Stop doing what is wrong and start doing what is right. 
#6 Do not treat prophecies with contempt
 In those early days, before the New Testament was written, this was done orally; prophets spoke the mind of the Spirit in an assembly. Today we have the written Scriptures. So prophesying really becomes what we call today expository preaching and teaching. 
It is opening the mind of God from the Word of God. That is the wisdom of God. That is telling you how to act, how to think and how to order your life. Do not treat it lightly.
#7 Test all things
Evil and deception can show itself even in a spiritual setting, so it is important for Christians to test all things. When the test has been made to the standard of God’s Word and the discernment of spirit among the leaders, we then hold fast to what is good.
#8 Reject every kind of evil.
When the testing is made, any aspect of evil must be rejected. This includes evil that may come with a spiritual image. The evil that is perceive in the heart, and acts that we do to repays evil for evil. Rejecting them happens when we test them. 

As he concludes, Paul made it clear that sanctification is God’s work in us. He puts this emphasis in the words Himself. He who calls you is faithful, and He will do it. 
All through this letter the coming of our Lord Jesus is the great hope set before us. Jesus is coming again. God's kingdom will come on earth.
The apostle leaves us with the hope of the coming of our Lord, and the resources God has provided, so that we may live in a new and different way in the midst of this modern age.

Let us Pray: Heavenly father, thank you for the wisdom that you have given us. Help us to walk through with these resources that we may be blameless on the day of the Lord. Amen.

Living Christianly Part I 

1 Thessalonians 5: 12-15 

Christians are to recognize their leaders in 5 different ways.

1. Leaders are recognized not by their title but by their service. The title describes what that person really is before God and man.

 

1.  Leaders are recognized as being over the congregation in the sense of ruling and providing headship, as a shepherd is over the sheep. This describes a clear and legitimate order of authority.

 

1. Leaders are recognized as those who admonish the congregation. To admonish means to caution or to reprove gently; to warn. While its tone is brotherly, it is big-brotherly.

 

1. Christian ministers, who preach the whole truth, and labour in the word and doctrine, are entitled to more than respect; the apostle commands them to be esteemed, abundantly, and this is to be done in love.

 

1. If a Christian can’t esteem and love their pastor, they should get on their knees, asking the Holy Spirit to change their heart as long as they believe God has placed them to show esteem and love.

 

 

The mark of true Christian faith is that it changes everything you do and say. It affects every area of your life. 

Four special attitudes, Paul says, are required for this

First, 

1. Be patient 
2. See that none of you repays evil for evil
3. Encourage one another and to all
4. Help the weak ones

1. Patience is willingness to keep trying over and over again. Non-retaliation means that you do not strike back and try to get even with someone who may have hurt you in the process of helping him or her. 

 

1. Believers who go regularly to church, and profess to believe the Bible, often seem to go along with practices of the world around them with hardly any consciousness that what they are doing is unbiblical and really wrong. They evade paying their bills. They cheat on their taxes. They ignore needy people. They fail to keep appointments. 

 

1. Some people need encouragement. People may think they do not belong and cannot contribute anything, must be helped to find their place because they do have a place. In the wonderful picture of the body at work, in First Corinthians 12, the apostle says, "The ear cannot say, 'Because I am not an eye I am not part of the body.' No," says Paul, "even if it says that, it does not make it any less a part of the body," (1 Corinthians 12:16). 

 

We are to help each other find our place, give them something to do and encourage them in the work that they are doing.

 

1. Help the weak ones." This means especially those whom Romans 14 describes as being "weak in the faith" (Romans 14:1 ); those who do not know very much about the doctrine of the Christian life, who have not learned the truth that sets them free and need extra help. Perhaps they are not sure of their salvation, or they feel guilty about the past and do not sense they have really been forgiven yet by God. 

 

A Christian may no longer act as he did before he came to Christ. This is very clear in the letters of the apostle. How does this reflect on your living ?

1 Thess 5:1-11 

The Fate of the Earth

We learned from chapter 4  that Christians are not waiting for the judgment and wrath of God but for the coming of the Son of God. 

Paul opens up about the times and the seasons.  When Christ returns he will remain on earth for this lengthy period. Thus, the "day of the Lord" is a series of events.

We must understand that no one living can name the precise date when the Lord will appear and begin the "day of the Lord," there are three characteristics of that day that we can look forward  

#1 He will come stealthily

 The first characteristic of the "day of the Lord," says Paul, is that it will come stealthily. It will come like a thief in the night.

The Lord will come at a time when "peace and security" seem to prevail, when nothing out of the ordinary is expected. That is how the "day of the Lord" begins. This is not just the Apostle Paul's idea. Jesus said the same thing in Luke 17:26, 27

It is very important that we understand that God's delay of this event is to give people a chance to redeem themselves through Jesus Christ. 

#2 we might live with Him 

The second reason the apostle gives is that "we might live with Him." That is how he puts it here. "Whether we wake or sleep we might live with him." Those are also the wonderful words with which he closed Chapter 4: "so we shall always be with the Lord," (1 Thessalonians 4:17)

The only hope for any individual is to turn to the Lord Jesus and rely upon the value of his death and resurrection. 

That is what Paul calls becoming a child of light and not of darkness: "For you are all sons of light and sons of the day." In Colossians 1 he says: "We have been delivered from the kingdom of darkness and transferred to the kingdom of God's beloved Son," (Colossians 1:13)

#3 They shall not escape. 

In the second coming of our Lord there will be those who are raised from the dead joining with those who are alive and remain  translated, as Paul puts it in First Corinthians 15, "We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye ..." (1 Corinthians 15:51-52). 

So during the tribulation and during the Millennium that follows there will be resurrected saints and translated saints, living with mortal human beings upon the earth. 

And in the center, the focus of all attention, the risen, glorified, transfigured Lord himself.

Jesus died in our place. Not simply that Jesus died for us in the sense as a favor for us; but that He died as a substitute for us. So that the wrath does not harm us. 

That is God's picture of the fate of the earth. As we see what is coming in world affairs we can understand that the hope of the believer is to be with Christ. 

Use your opportunities. Wake up to the opportunity of the day. Encourage one another, and build one another up. It is so easy to lose sight of God's perspective otherwise.

Heavenly father, no one knows the time and place. But we know this will be a season and time that we look forward. Hence, help us to encourage one another and spiritually watchful. In Jesus Name. Amen.

1 Thessalonians 4:9-18

Comfort at the End

No one knows what circumstances he is going to face tomorrow as that is characteristic of the future. 

We cannot live in tomorrow, but we can live today and this issue was troubling the Thessalonian Christians as they were looking toward tomorrow, but wondering what to do today.

So, Paul’s advice to them was to keep their attitude toward others warm and gracious, to watch how they speak and if they offend anyone to correct it.

He claims that God, through his Holy Spirit, teaches us to love one another as it is said in Romans 5:5 God's love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

If we give that love of the Spirit a welcome, we can manifest love to each other but if we choose to be bitter, of course, then that love will not be manifested.

The Christians in Thessalonica were making fools of themselves by stressing the nearness of the coming of the Lord to such a degree that they had stopped working and have become a burden to others.

So, Paul is asking them to keep themselves busy by the works of their hands to provide their own needs, just like what Jesus said to his disciples in Luke 19:13, Occupy till I come, because no one except the Father in heaven knows the second coming of Christ Jesus.

Paul uses the term sleep for death and it shows that death, for the believer, is nothing more than sleep.

In Mark 5:39, the daughter of Jairus who had died as, she is sleeping. It is a wonderful encouraging word for those who are facing the death of dear ones.

Paul knew the differences between time and eternity so he reassures them by explaining that the living and the dead will be together when our Lord returns.

He assures them by saying, Yes, you will see your loved ones immediately when the Lord returns, whether you join that event when you die, or whether the Lord comes while you are yet alive, your loved ones will be with him.

In John 11:43, Jesus had stood before the tomb of Lazarus and cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth, and the dead man appeared in the doorway of the tomb, still wrapped in his grave clothes because he heard the voice of the Son of God, and he came forth.

So, when Paul says that the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a cry of command, this is addressed to the dead, to those in the tombs who had fallen asleep in Jesus and this is the first sound.

The second sound is the archangel's call, where the living nation of Israel will be summoned to a new relationship with Jesus, to follow him wherever he goes on earth during the time of his presence.

The third sound is the great trumpet call such as was heard at Mt. Sinai when the Law was given, and when that sound reaches the ears of living believers, although it will be inaudible to the world, they will be changed and caught up to be with the Lord.

The comforting hope is that we shall see Jesus face to face and all will be together as the great family of God and forever be with the Lord.

What a marvellous hope we have! When we face the thought of our own death, or when we stand at the grave of a loved one, we are comforted indeed by this tremendous vision of the tomorrow that awaits God's own. 

That is the apostle's purpose in giving this revelation. Let us revel in the comfort it brings in the hour of death -- our own, or that of a loved one.

Heavenly Father, what a wonderful privilege that You should call us into your own kingdom and into Your glory. We pray that we may live a sanctified life and walk in a worthy manner that brings glory to You. Teach us on living a spiritual life and may we be a witness of Your grace to all with whom we come in contact. We ask this in Jesus name, AMEN.
