The Helmet of Salvation
Ephesians 6:17
When Paul mentions the Roman helmet, he identifies it as a helmet of salvation.
A helmet protects a soldier against damaging and deadly blows to the head. Spiritually speaking, the helmet of salvation provides hope and protects the mind against anything that would disorient or destroy the Christian, such as discouragement or deceit.
Perhaps the thought in Paul's mind was that the enemy targets the mind in spiritual warfare.
His attack, especially to a young, immature believer, usually seeks to dismiss the very existence of God. Doubts fly in the same way as a sword attacks the head.
It is then that you do not want a bag on your head instead of a helmet provided by the heavenly Master.
The assurance of salvation is there as protection over the mind.
The inner witness of the Spirit that we are God's children protect a person's mind as a helmet protects the head: “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children” (Romans 8:16).
We can face every demonic attack knowing that nothing can separate us from God’s love.
Salvation and eternal life are gifts God greatly desires to give to mankind: “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4).
Whatever trial or hardship, persecution, famine, danger, or sword that life throws at us, we know that we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us. Paul says:
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39).
When we know, deep down, that nothing can separate us from God’s love, not even demonic powers, angels, or demons, our minds are firmly secure in the Lord.
Book of Hebrews compares hope to an anchor, giving us stability and the ability to weather the worst of storms Hebrews 6:17-19
Our minds are the most significant battleground, and that is why it is so essential for us to win the battle in our minds.
To cover and protect our minds with the helmet of salvation, we immerse our minds in the truth of God’s Word that our salvation is complete and does not rely on us.
It is a finished work that God has accomplished for us.
Let us pray
Dear Lord, help us to rely upon you for protection. Help us to guard our mind against various aspects that can help us sink, and focus on what is important. In Jesus' name. Amen.
