Prayer for Boldness | Ephesians 6:18 -23 |
There is a strong and powerful relationship between putting on the armor of God and praying.
These two things belong together, in fact, one grows out of the other. It is not enough to put on the armor of God, you must also pray.
It is impossible to divide these two. Putting on the armor is essentially something that is done in the realm of your thought life.
It is an adjustment of the attitude of your heart to reality.
Many of us who are Christians, struggle with prayer life. Sometimes we struggle to improve the quality as well as the quantity of our prayer lives.
We adopt an approach to start thinking about the armour of God, wear the elements before we can pray.
Having just finished an epistle on the nature of the church, Paul was well aware of this fact and humble enough to request prayer for himself while he was in prison.
He asks for intercession in today’s passage, specifically exhorting the Ephesians to pray for his boldness in proclaiming the mystery of the gospel. This gospel was the reason for his chains.
The apostle was about to go before the most powerful man on earth in his day — the caesar. Due to the intimidating arrogance of the Roman court, it would have been tempting even for him to avoid speaking the truth boldly.
Paul was never a foolish man. He had all the spiritual help he could get in fulfilling the call to preach to the emperor.
He needed others praying with him that he might wear the armor of God.
Paul’s final greeting to Ephesians includes a benediction that both peace and love with faith would be ours from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Eph. 6:23).
This is a fitting way to end the epistle, for peace has been an important theme of Ephesians, both the peace we have with God in Christ Jesus and the peace that results between brothers and sisters in Christ as we strive for unity based on love.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, help us and make us a vessel willing to stand for the essential truths of the Christian faith. Transform us to serve as a model to other believers. Help us to work together in unity. In Jesus Name. Amen.
