John 8:1-11
Jesus & Guilt Ridden
Jesus, at dawn went to the temple courts to teach and many people heard the message of God.
During that time, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law brought in a women who committed adultery and was guilty of sin.
They complained to Jesus on what she has done and according the law of Moses, she has to be stoned to death.
Jesus, was powerfully ministering to the people in Israel and many believed in Jesus.
They repented for their sins, baptized, and accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
Scriptures gives us many evidences (Luke 2:47, Matthew 13:54, Mark 1:27) as how people in Israel was awestruck by the works of Jesus; with wisdom He spoke, with authority he rebuked the evil, with compassion He forgave and healed the sick.
At the same time, on the other hand, the attitudes of the Pharisees, the Sadducees and the teachers of the Law towards Jesus revealed emotions of anger and Jealousy.
Out of Envy and hatred they spoke to Jesus, waited for the opportune time to kill Jesus.
They said, the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”
It is clearly evident that they were using the time to accuse Jesus.
They were using this question as a trap, accusing him.
The law of Moses teaches us that ‘people caught in adultery, both the man and women must be brought into judgement and then be stoned to death (Leviticus 20:10, Deuteronomy 22:23).
The Pharisees bought only the women to be accused.
Jesus was patient enough because he already knew the mindset of those Pharisees and the teachers of the Law.
He knew that they were the worst sinners.Maybe much more than the women who was caught in the adultery. Because they are teachers of the law of Moses who are well versed in scriptures too.
Jesus immediately said without inquiring anything to the women, “If anyone of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Now, their hearts were convicted. The only good thing that the Pharisees did to Jesus so far is that they acknowledged that they were sinners too.
First, the older ones left and then the younger ones, with only Jesus and the women who was caught in adultery. Jesus had a compassionate heart and he forgave the sin of the woman.
Jesus did not condemn neither the women or the teachers of the Law, but with deep intrigued-warning he reminded the pharisees that they have sinned too and with a deep-compassionate heart he encouraged the women to live her life free from sin.
When we meet people in the world, we must never think we are better than them. Always think others as better than us. Be ready to forgive like Jesus did. Do not be jealous or store hatred in your heart like the pharisees.
If we can do this, we surely can be a witness to everyone around us.
Prayer:
Dear lord, help us understand our role and help us to humble ourselves and look at others as better than us. In JESUS NAME
Amen
