Philippians 1:12-15
Advancing the Gospel.
In the past, missionaries who spread the gospel boarded ships to go to a foreign land and did not expect to see their homeland again.
Their goodbyes were final to their friends and family. There was no turning back.
Today we have the technology advanced much, yet, for those who are pioneering still require a high level of sacrifice, count the cost so that they can press through the frontiers of spiritual darkness.
These are to reach people who are neglected, new people groups, people who are oppressed.
When we consider paul who was imprisoned, Many of us might get to the mode of bitterness and might give up.
But Paul saw this as an opportunity to share the gospel.
He recognizes that in God obstacles are really opportunities, and nothing can really imperil the gospel.
That is an amazing declaration when you think about it.
When Paul was with the Philippians, there were amazing examples of the sovereign power of God, a divine jail-break, and their vindication before civil magistrates (Acts 16:11-40).
The circumstances around Paul’s imprisonment and his manner in the midst of it made it clear to all observers that he was not just another prisoner, but that he was an emissary of Jesus Christ.
This witness led to the conversion of many, even some of the palace guards.
Paul knew that some preached because they wanted to “surpass” Paul in ministry and to promote their own name and place it above Paul’s.
Ambition isn’t necessarily bad; there is nothing wrong in wanting to be the best we can be for God.
But selfish ambition is most concerned about a successful image, instead of striving for true success before God.
During this difficult time, let us live and speak fearlessly for Christ and for the sake of the Gospel. when we do that we encourage others to do the same. Let us not do anything out of selfish ambitions but with a selfless attitude to share the gospel with those who need it the most.
When we do that we can see with our own eyes what God did in Rome through paul can happen amongst us.
Prayer:
Father, I pray that I recognize that confidence doesn't come by some effort to convince myself, some struggle to think positively, but from a quiet resting upon an unchangeable fact — that Jesus Christ lives His life within me, and that He is quite competent to meet every situation.
